 Gardner House restoration
G. Greene Construction recently completed renovations to Brown University’s Gardner House. This antique, 3-story guesthouse is situated on campus and is frequently occupied by dignitaries visiting the school. Within the house, the G. Greene team performed a complete gut renovation to the kitchen, refurbished the entryway and 3-story staircase as well as upgraded the majority of the bedrooms and living spaces. Three bathrooms were also renovated, including converting a first floor bathroom to an ADA accessible bathroom. Landscaping improvements were made to the exterior of the house including a brick walkway and driveway, along with a handicap entrance.
The Gardner House was originally built in 1806. For many years the house remained a single family residence on George Street until it was eventually partitioned into a multi-family home. In 1932, the house was acquired by Brown University. Shortly after, George Warren Gardner, M.D, a graduate of Brown, and his wife offered to donate their nearby home on Orchard Street, including their antiques, in exchange for an early American home to reside in. Preparations were made for them to restore the house and occupy it for as long as they lived. Upon their deaths, the house became available to Brown as an historic museum and guest house.
