SPECT CT Installation

Massachusetts General Hospital

Project Overview

Massachusetts General Hospital brought in G. Greene Construction to manage the replacement of two existing CT units with a larger SPECT CT system on the second floor of the White Building. The scope included construction of a new lead-lined control room with switchable glass, a shared office for nurses, and an infusion room with three cubicles.

The job also required mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems and existing facility modifications and architectural work elsewhere in the building, along with precise coordination to maintain operations.

This was a one-phase project executed in an active imaging department. This, in addition to the sheer weight of the new unit and age of the building, made careful coordination an imperative.

“We removed two existing CTs and put in a larger one that weighed a lot more,” said Project Manager Nolan Deverix. “We had to go into the floor below, open up down there, and install structural support into first-floor offices to support the new load.”

This work took place over the weekend to minimize disruption.

“Friday night, Saturday, Sunday—then by Monday morning, it looked like we weren’t in there,” Deverix said.

Solutions

Access and shutdowns had to be scheduled around live CT operations in adjacent spaces. The team worked closely with MGH’s radiology department to manage room availability and access and nurse call system testing.

Results

Greene delivered the project without disruption to patient care. The new SPECT CT suite is now fully operational and supported by reinforced structural systems.
